Tour Roundup: Dunstone downs McEwen to win Lloydminster title
Winnipeg’s Team Matt Dunstone captured a third title on tour this season after winning the Astec Safety Challenge tour event in Lloydminster.
Dunstone defeated Saskatoon’s Team Mike McEwen 7-2 during Saturday’s final at the Lloydminster Curling Club.
Tied 1-1, McEwen wrecked on a guard to give up a critical steal of four points in the fourth end. McEwen clipped another guard in the fifth to settle for a single and shook hands after Dunstone scored a deuce in the sixth.
Team Dunstone went undefeated through the tournament. Following a 3-0 run in the triple knockout stage, Dunstone beat Scotland’s Team Ross Whyte 6-5 in the quarterfinals and Sweden’s Team Niklas Edin 7-6 in the semifinals.
Although E.J. Harnden just joined Team Dunstone full-time, it’s actually his second title with the team this season. Harnden filled in during the Red Deer Curling Classic in November as B.J. Neufeld was absent.
After parting ways with Neufeld last month, Harnden came on board at second with Colton Lott shifting to third. The move reunited the “Brush Brothers” as the team also includes Ryan Harnden at lead.
The world’s best teams now head to Guelph for the WFG Masters, beginning Tuesday at the Sleeman Centre.
