Tirinzoni, Edin lead Rogers Grand Slam Cup standings
Silvana Tirinzoni has taken over the top spot in the Rogers Grand Slam Cup standings.
Tirinzoni surpassed Allison Flaxey to sit atop of the leaderboard thanks to a runner-up finish at the Meridian Canadian Open.
The Swiss skip scored nine points in North Battleford, Sask., on Sunday to move up into first place with 27 total points accumulated so far during the 2016-17 Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season. Flaxey, of Caledon, Ont., was a quarterfinalist at the Meridian Canadian Open earning five points to stay in the chase in second place at 25.
Right behind Flaxey are Meridian Canadian Open semifinalists Val Sweeting of Edmonton (24 points) and Anna Hasselborg of Sweden (23 points). Both counted seven points for their final four appearances.
Meanwhile, Meridian Canadian Open runner-up Niklas Edin of Sweden maintained the No. 1 spot on the men’s side leading with 40 points. Event winner Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., received 12 points to slip past Brad Jacobs into second place (31 points) in his quest to retain the Rogers Grand Slam Cup title. Jacobs, of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., sits in third at 30 followed by Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers in fourth place with 22 points.
The Rogers Grand Slam Cup is awarded annually to the men’s and women’s teams who secure the most points over the course of the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season following the conclusion of the Players’ Championship. The top four men’s and women’s teams receive bonuses with the winners earning $75,000 each.
The race for the Rogers Grand Slam Cup will come down to the wire with roughly double points up for grabs at the Players’ Championship in April.
