Sinclair, Persinger secure Champions Cup spots

The field is filling up fast for the Humpty’s Champions Cup.

Four more spots were locked down this weekend for the season-ending Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling tournament running April 24-29 at Calgary’s WinSport Arena.

Jamie Sinclair successfully defended the U.S. national women’s championship to secure her team’s spot once again at the Humpty’s Champions Cup. Sinclair ran the table with an unblemished 8-0 record including a 6-5 victory over Cory Christensen’s team in Saturday’s final in Fargo, N.D.

Greg Persinger also grabbed a Humpty’s Champions Cup spot by winning the U.S. national men’s championship. Team Persinger, skipped by third Rich Ruohonen, went 10-1 in the tournament including a 7-5 decision over Heath McCormick in the final.

Canada cleaned up at the world junior championships in Aberdeen, Scotland, with Kaitlyn Jones and Tyler Tardi now booking their Humpty’s Champions Cup places. Jones defeated defending champion Isabella Wrana of Sweden 7-4 while Tardi topped Scotland’s Ross Whyte 6-5 in an extra end for the gold.

Brad Gushue repeated as the Tim Hortons Brier champion Sunday beating Alberta’s Brendan Bottcher 6-4. Gushue already guaranteed his Humpty’s Champions Cup spot by winning the Tour Challenge Tier 1 back in September, thus opening up a spot for a World Curling Tour winner to receive an invitation. Also, Olympic gold medallist John Shuster will be unable to attend with his team visiting the White House.

The next opportunity for a men’s team to grab a Humpty’s Champions Cup invitation is the Princess Auto Elite 10 running Thursday to Sunday at Winnipeg’s St. James Civic Centre.

The Humpty’s Champions Cup features 15 men’s teams and 15 women’s who have won a high-profile tournament.
