Sigfridsson tops Homan to win Stockholm Ladies Curling Cup
Sweden’s Margaretha Sigfridsson defeated Ottawa’s Rachel Homan 6-3 in seven ends Sunday to win the Stockholm Ladies Curling Cup.
Sigfridsson jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a triple in the opening end. Homan scored one in the second before Sigfridsson padded her lead with a single in the third followed by a steal of one in the fourth to hold a 5-1 advantage.
The two rinks traded singles through the fifth and sixth ends. Trailing 6-2, Homan was forced to settle for one in the seventh after Sigfridsson’s fourth Maria Prytz nailed a double takeout with her final shot and the two rinks shook hands.
The team of Sigfridsson, Prytz, third Christina Bertrup and second Maria Wennerström posted a perfect 7-0 record to win the title.
Sigfridsson was victorious 9-3 in six ends over Olympic champion Jennifer Jones 9-3 in the semifinals while Homan beat Switzerland’s Silvana Tirinzoni 6-4 to reach the final.
Jones defeated Tirinzoni 7-3 in seven ends to win the third place match.
The Point Optical Curling Classic continues Monday with quarterfinal action in Saskatoon.
The triple knockout tournament saw both Brad Jacobs, from Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen cruise into the playoffs winning three straight games.
Japan’s Yusuke Morozumi and Sweden’s Niklas Edin advanced through the B Event while Saskatoon’s Clint Dieno, Toronto’s John Epping, Calgary’s Kevin Koe and Brad Gushue from St. John’s reached the playoffs through the C Event.
Julie Hastings held on 6-5 to beat Jacqueline Harrison and win the KW Fall Classic in Waterloo, Ont. Scott McDonald scored five in the fourth end to defeat hometown favourite Richard Krell 5-1 in six ends in the men’s final. … Two-time world champion Mary-Anne Arsenault beat Mary Fay 7-4 to win the Gibson’s Cashspiel in Lower Sackville, N.S. Jamie Danbrook defeated Chad Stevens 7-3 in seven ends in the all-Halifax rink men’s final. … Kristy McDonald beat Colleen Kilgallen 6-3 to win the Mother Club Fall Curling Classic in Winnipeg. Sean Grassie won the men’s title with an 8-5 win over Steve Irwin.
