Peterman, McDonald pose for calendar to support mental health

When Jocelyn Peterman was asked to pose for the 2017 Women of Curling calendar, the reigning Scotties Tournament of Hearts and Canadian mixed doubles champion jumped at the opportunity to participate.

Peterman, who throws second stones for Calgary’s Team Carey, is featured as “Miss September” with her portion of proceeds going towards the Smiles Thru Lindsey Foundation, a charity benefitting young adults struggling with mental illness.

It’s a cause near and dear to Peterman as the charity was created in honour of her friend and former teammate Lindsey More, who took her own life after battling depression for several years.

“Lindsey was a pilot so I got to do the pictures with her plane,” Peterman said. “Her mom and her sister were there so it was a cool experience for me. It was really special and I think it was a cool tribute to her.”

Raising awareness and funds to fight mental illness is also very important to Team Rocque second Taylor McDonald, who is supporting the Mental Health Foundation based in Edmonton.

The photography in the Women of Curling calendar ranges from athletic to classy to glamour shots and the two-time Canadian university champ was surprised her pictures ended up on the risqué side of things as “Miss February” appears to be wearing a sweater and not much else.

“It was awkward but good,” McDonald said with a laugh. “It was really fun. My photographer was awesome and he guided me through the whole thing. That was nice but not wearing pants in a public place was kind of weird.”

Peterman and McDonald are among the 12 curlers appearing in the 2017 Women of Curling calendar with proceeds from the sales helping 14 different charities and causes chosen by the participants.
