Paetz completes Champions Cup women’s field
The field is now set for the 2017 Humpty’s Champions Cup running April 25-30 at WinSport Arena in Calgary.
Only Margaretha Sigfridsson, Michelle Englot and Tracy Fleury were in the running at the WestJet Players’ Championship for the 15th women’s spot to the season-ending Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling event as the other nine teams had already qualified by winning high-profile events earlier in the season.
Sigfridsson and Englot missed the playoffs while Fleury was eliminated in Saturday night’s quarterfinals. That freed up the 15th and final spot to the next highest-ranked tour event winner of the season: Team Alina Paetz.
The Swiss squad of Paetz, Nadine Lehmann, Marisa Winkelhausen and Nicole Schwaegli scored a tour victory at the International Bernese Ladies Cup in their home country in January.
Meanwhile, Scotland’s Kyle Smith was still in the running on the men’s side of the WestJet Players’ Championship, but a loss to Sweden’s Niklas Edin in the semifinals meant tour winner Tom Brewster of Scotland gets in.
Brewster, third Glen Muirhead, second Ross Paterson and lead Hammy McMillan Jr. won the Perth Masters in January.
