Olympic gold medallist Hasselborg grabs Champions Cup spot

Tre Kronor: Anna Hasselborg has skipped Sweden to its third Olympic gold medal in women’s curling.

Hasselborg defeated South Korea’s own EunJung Kim 8-3 in Sunday’s final at the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Games.

The victory secures Hasselborg a spot in the Humpty’s Champions Cup — the season-ending Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling tournament — running April 24-29 at Calgary’s WinSport Arena.

Hasselborg posted a 7-2 round-robin record in the Olympic tournament and defeated Great Britain’s Eve Muirhead 10-5 in the semifinals. She is supported by third Sara McManus, second Agnes Knochenhauer and lead Sofia Mabergs.

Anette Norberg skipped Sweden to back-to-back golds at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Games.

The team of Kim, KyeongAe Kim, SeonYeong Kim and YeongMi Kim topped the table at 8-1 and edged Japan, skipped by Satsuki Fujisawa, in an 8-7 extra-end thriller to reach the gold-medal game.

Meanwhile, American John Shuster stunned Niklas Edin of Sweden 10-7 to win the men’s gold medal Saturday and earn his Humpty’s Champions Cup spot.

Teams must win a high-profile tournament in order to receive an invitation to the Humpty’s Champions Cup. Edin (European Championship) and Kim (Pacific-Asia Championship) had already qualified.
