National returning to Sault Ste. Marie

The Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling returns to Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., for the 2016 National, Dec. 6-11 at the Essar Centre.

Sault Ste. Marie hosted the event in 2014 with Winnipeg’s Team McEwen topping hometown heroes Team Jacobs in the final.

The National has since doubled in size with last season’s event in Oshawa, Ont., introducing a women’s title. Ottawa’s Team Homan were crowned the inaugural National women’s champions defeating Team Fleury of Sudbury, Ont., in the final. Team Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., came out on top to claim the men’s title with a win over Winnipeg’s Team Carruthers.

Teams also compete for bonus points in the chase for the Rogers Grand Slam Cup, awarded to the overall season champions.

National winners are guaranteed berths to the Humpty’s Champions Cup, the season-ending Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling event featuring all of the top champions of the year in one final showdown.

The National is also the second of four majors on the circuit as one of the original events in the series alongside the Masters, Canadian Open, and Players’ Championship.
