Muirhead earns Humpty’s Champions Cup invitation
UPDATE: Sportsnet and the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling have cancelled the 2020 Humpty’s Champions Cup.
Eve Muirhead’s title victory at the CAMERON’S Brewing Oakville Fall Classic to start the curling year has now helped her Scottish squad gain a spot into the season-ending Humpty’s Champions Cup.
Muirhead earned an invitation to the sixth and final Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling event — taking place April 29 to May 3 at the Olds Sportsplex in Olds, Alta. — after Kerri Einarson’s club captured the Scotties Tournament of Hearts on Sunday. Einarson had already booked her Humpty’s Champions Cup ticket after claiming the 2019 Players’ Championship, thus freeing up a place for another World Curling Tour event winner.
Meanwhile, Winnipeg’s Jacques Gauthier and Mackenzie Zacharias of Altona, Man., secured their spots in the Humpty’s Champions Cup on Saturday after winning gold medals for Canada at the world junior curling championships in Krasnoyarsk, Russia.
The Humpty’s Champions Cup features 12 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams who have won high-profile titles in order to qualify. Only three events remain to complete the field: the Canadian men’s curling championship (Tim Hortons Brier) and both men’s and women’s world curling championships.
