Mouat steals to stun Edin at Humpty’s Champions Cup

SHERWOOD PARK, Alta. — Reigning world junior champion Bruce Mouat of Scotland stole a point in the eighth end to upset Niklas Edin of Sweden 6-5 during Draw 6 action Thursday morning at the Humpty’s Champions Cup. 

It’s the first win in the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling for the 21-year-old Mouat, who is making his series debut at the season finale event and improved to a 1-2 record in pool play. Edin, a two-time world men’s champion, is level with a 1-1 record. 

Meanwhile, Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen moved up to a 2-0 record curling a nearly perfect 99 percent to double up Toronto’s John Epping 8-4. Epping is now at 1-1. 

Scotland’s David Murdoch also climbed to 2-0 scoring a 6-2 victory over American Brady Clark (0-2). Team Murdoch curled an impressive 98 percent total with second Scott Andrews and third Greg Drummond throwing perfect 100 percents and skip Murdoch getting 98 percent. 

In women’s division action, Edmonton’s Kelsey Rocque counted three in the eighth to slip past Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland 5-4. Rocque now holds a 1-2 record while Tirinzoni, the Tour Challenge Tier 1 winner, fell to a 0-2.

NOTES: The Humpty’s Champions Cup is the seventh and final event of the 2015-16 Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling season and runs through to Sunday at the Sherwood Park Arena Sports Centre. … TV coverage begins at 2:30 p.m. ET / 11:30 a.m. PT on Sportsnet. … The event is the second of two new tournaments added to the schedule this year along with the Tour Challenge, which kicked off the season in September. … Teams had to win an event over the course of the season in order to qualify for the Humpty’s Champions Cup.
