Morris, Muirhead highlight Champions Cup spares

John Morris on Team Shuster? Jim Cotter on Team Edin? Eve Muirhead on Team Hasselborg?

A handful of teams will look slightly different at the Humpty’s Champions Cup next week in Saskatoon with the world mixed doubles curling championship taking place at the same time overseas in Stavanger, Norway.

The two-time Olympic gold medallist Morris is expected to sub for skip John Shuster, who is competing for the U.S. at the mixed doubles tournament. Cotter takes over for Team Edin third Oskar Eriksson and Muirhead spares for skip Anna Hasselborg with the Swedish players set to represent their nation as well.

Lori Olson-Johns got the call for Jennifer Jones’s team with second Jocelyn Peterman competing for Canada. Brad Gushue will have Colton Lott at second for Brett Gallant.

In other substitution news, Laura Walker steps in for skip Alli Flaxey and gets a head start playing alongside a couple of her future teammates. Walker announced her lineup for next season featuring current Team Flaxey third Kate Cameron and second Taylor McDonald.

Vicky Persinger rejoins U.S. national champions Team Jamie Sinclair with Monica Walker announcing her retirement last week.

Rachel Homan’s team will have Jolene Campbell subbing for second Joanne Courtney, who is pregnant.

The 2019 Humpty’s Champions Cup starts next Tuesday at Merlis Belsher Place and features 15 men’s teams and 15 women’s teams who have won high-profile events in order to qualify.
