McEwen edges Epping to win Point Optical Curling Classic

Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen scored the winning point in the final end to edge Toronto’s John Epping 5-4 and win the Point Optical Curling Classic title in Saskatoon on Monday night.

McEwen pulled ahead 2-1 following a single in the second and a steal of one in the third. Epping regained the lead with a deuce in the fourth but McEwen bounced back scoring a pair of his own in the sixth to take a 4-3 advantage.

Epping settled for a single in the seventh to tie it 4-4.

It was a rematch of the Stu Sells Oakville Tankard on Sept. 8 that saw McEwen top Epping 6-2 in seven ends.

McEwen, third B.J. Neufeld, second Matt Wozniak and lead Denni Neufeld finished the Point Optical Curling Classic with a perfect 6-0 record and are now 13-0 overall in the 2014-15 season.

The McEwen rink earned 40 points on the World Curling Tour and now lead the year-to-date order of merit rankings.

Coming up next for McEwen is the Canad Inns Men’s Classic (Oct. 17-20 in Portage la Prairie, Man.) where his team is the defending champion and winner of three of the past four bonspiels.
