Meakin named Canadian flag-bearer for Winter Universiade
Curling skip Breanne Meakin will carry the Canadian flag during the opening ceremonies of the 2015 Winter Universiade in Granada, Spain.
Meakin, who guided the University of Manitoba team to the CIS title in 2013, was announced as Canada’s flag-bearer Tuesday. Her Canadian rink at the games features reigning national university champs third Lauren Horton, second Lynn Kreviazuk and lead Jessica Armstrong from Carleton.
“As the announcement was happening, I was just so excited,” Meakin said in a press release. “I really wasn’t expecting it, and I’m just so honoured to be chosen as the flag-bearer. The girls and I have worked hard, and we’re ready, and kicking it off in this fashion is pretty special.”
Meakin captured the Grand Slam of Curling bonus cup in 2011-12 with Team Cathy Overton-Clapham.
It’s the second straight Winter Universiade that a curler has carried the Canadian flag for the opening ceremonies after men’s skip Brendan Bottcher held the honour in 2013.
The opening ceremonies take place Wednesday at 6 p.m. local time (noon ET) and Meakin’s team hits the ice Thursday with games against South Korea and Japan.
