McEwen makes the list for Humpty’s Champions Cup

Mike McEwen pumped his fist when he found out he had clinched a berth in the season-ending Humpty’s Champions Cup.

McEwen’s Winnipeg crew is breaking up after 11 years together and extended the farewell tour by securing a spot in the 2017-18 season finale running April 24-29 at Calgary’s WinSport Arena.

Team McEwen punched their tickets by capturing the Princess Auto Elite 10 Sunday in their hometown defeating Team Gushue 3 & 1 in the match play final.

“I didn’t want to miss that event,” said McEwen, who will join Team Carruthers next season. “It’s kind of like a bonus Slam. It’s a fun one, it’s year-ending, people and teams are tired but … it’s a lot of people from the sport coming together to have that send-off into the off-season. I mean, it’s very competitive but it’s got a different vibe to it that is really enjoyable to be part of and I’m really happy to be going there.”

Teams must win a high-profile tournament over the course of the season in order to receive an invitation to the Humpty’s Champions Cup.

The Calgary tournament will be the final time we’ll see several teams in their current form such as Tour Challenge Tier 1 winners Team Sweeting, Meridian Canadian Open champions Team Carey and more with rosters shuffling as they prepare for the 2022 Winter Olympics.

“We want to finish strong just because of the kind of year that we’ve had,” said Chelsea Carey, who has formed a new team for next season with Sarah Wilkes, Dana Ferguson and Rachel Brown. “We feel really good about what we’ve been able to accomplish as a group and want to finish that off on a good note together for sure.”

The next Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling tournament is the Players’ Championship, taking place April 10-15 in Toronto, and will serve as the final chance for teams to qualify for the Humpty’s Champions Cup.
