First End: Plot twist! The teams got to decide which player on the opposite team had to throw the draw to the button to determine the hammer. Team Mouat picked Emma Miskew and Team Homan selected Bobby Lammie. Miskew’s draw went right through the rings. It looked like Lammie’s shooter was sailing past the house as well, however, it stopped just in time at the back of the 12-foot circle.
Homan’s first skip stone flashed and her second wrecked on a guard, opening the door for Mouat to draw for two. Although his shooter clipped another rock, it rolled in to win the skin.
Second End: What do you even call that one? Homan was looking for two, but her pinball shot almost led to a Mouat steal. Homan counted only one and the end carried over.
Third End: Mouat overcame the first sweep swap as Lammie and Hammy McMillan Jr. brushed with Brownie brooms during Grant Hardie’s second shot. Already sitting one on the button, Mouat tapped out Homan’s rock to count two and cash in another skin.
Fourth End: Mouat is money. Homan slashed out Mouat’s rock from the house on her first skip stone to sit three, however, he drew around to bite the top of the four-foot circle for shot rock under cover from his guard. Homan attempted an angle raise takeout but missed the mark as Mouat stole the skin.
Fifth End: Rachel Homan, everybody! With Mouat sitting three, Homan needed to find a way to get shot rock and avoid giving up a steal. Homan raised her guard, bounced off of Mouat’s stone and in for a piece of the button.
Sixth End: Homan’s on the board. Homan drew around to the top of the 12-foot circle to sit two and force Mouat into a tricky shot. Mouat managed to angle raise in to remove the top one but missed the other at the back of the house as Homan stole the skin.
Seventh End: Mouat already sat shot rock and drew in for a second stone to score the decisive skin.
Eighth/Extra End: Homan came up short of the draw for two and a draw-to-the-button shootout decided the winner of the final skin. Homan grab a bit of the top of the four-foot circle, but Mouat was able to outcount it.
Rules of the match
The Rio Mare Battle of the Sexes will be played to eight ends under a skins game format. Instead of total points, teams compete to win ends.
Ends 1-6 are worth $1,000 each and ends 7 and 8 are worth $3,000 each with the money going towards their charity of choice.
Teams can win an end by scoring two or more (with the hammer) or stealing one (without the hammer).
If neither requirement is met, the amount is carried over to the next end and the hammer flips.
If neither team wins the final end, a draw to the button determines the winner of that end (i.e., skips’ rocks).
In addition to their winnings from the skins game, a portion of ticket sales will go to each charity.
The Sweep Swap
Since sweeping differs in the men’s and women’s games, Team Mouat has agreed to use “soft foams” for their brooms — but that’s not all.
Twice in the game on non-skip stones (once during ends 1-4 and again during ends 5-8), Team Homan can call for a “Sweep Swap” where Team Mouat’s brushes are substituted with Brownie brooms.
