Jones secures spot in Humpty’s Champions Cup

Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones is the latest to lock down a berth for the Humpty’s Champions Cup.

Jones claimed the Masters title last month in Lloydminster, Sask., to secure a spot in the season-ending Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling tournament running April 24-29, 2018, at Calgary’s WinSport Arena.

The team of Jones, third Kaitlyn Lawes, second Jill Officer and lead Dawn McEwen captured the inaugural Humpty’s Champions Cup in 2016.

“It feels great,” Jones said. “We love that event, it’s always nice to play that event to end the year and nice to have it under our belts so we don’t have to worry about it.”

Jones dispatched provincial rival Kerri Einarson of East St. Paul 6-5 in the Masters women’s final to earn her record eighth Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling women’s title.

“It’s so tough. The events are so hard and I was really happy with how we performed,” said Jones, who finished the Masters with an unblemished 7-0 record. “We had a couple of rocky moments but came through with a big shot when we needed it. All-in-all, I’m pretty happy and it’s nice to qualify for the Champions Cup.”

The Humpty’s Champions Cup features all of the top winners of the season in one final showdown. From Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling champions, world champions, Olympic gold medallists and more, it’s a year-long quest for teams to punch their tickets to Calgary.

The 2014 Olympic gold medallist Jones joins a growing field that also includes reigning Humpty’s Champions Cup winners Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., and Ottawa’s Rachel Homan plus Tour Challenge Tier 1 champs Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., and Edmonton’s Val Sweeting.

Gushue was victorious at the Masters as well opening up another spot for a World Curling Tour event winner.
