Jacobs beats Carruthers to reach National semifinals

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. — Brad Jacobs continues his quest to win his first Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling title on home ice after advancing to the National semifinals.

The reigning Olympic gold medallist Jacobs scored two in the fifth and stole one in the seventh to eliminate Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers 6-3 during Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Carruthers cruised through the round robin with an undefeated 5-0 record.

Jacobs will now face Edmonton’s Brendan Bottcher, who moved on with a 7-1 win in six ends over Calgary’s John Morris. Watch the semifinals live on Sportsnet at 3:30 p.m. ET. 

Elsewhere, American Heath McCormick scored two in the final end to upset defending champion Glenn Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont., 6-5. McCormick meets Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen, who nailed an open hit to stick for a point in the final end and edge Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock 5-4.

The final is scheduled for Sunday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
