Gushue cruises past Virtue at Syncrude National

FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., jumped to a 3-0 record at the Syncrude National with a 10-5 victory over Regina’s Brock Virtue during Draw 7 Friday.

Gushue was already ahead by one when Virtue missed a takeout attempt in the seventh end that allowed the 2006 Olympic gold medallist to score a decisive four points that brought out the handshakes early.

Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen and Sven Michel of Switzerland also remain undefeated in the Grand Slam of Curling tournament with matching 4-0 records. McEwen scored a single in the eighth end to win 6-5 over Saskatoon’s Steve Laycock (1-2) and Michel earned a 6-1 victory over compatriot Pascal Hess (0-4).

Olympic gold medallist Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., improved to a 2-2 record with a 5-2 win over South Korea’s Soo-Hyuk Kim (1-2) and Halifax’s Mark Dacey also levelled his record at 2-2 with a 7-6 win over Toronto’s Travis Fanset (0-4).
