Gushue edges Edin in extra end for playoff spot at HearingLife Tour Challenge
CHARLOTTETOWN — Team Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., made it through to the playoffs in the HearingLife Tour Challenge.
Gushue drew against four counters to score the winning point in the extra end to eliminate Sweden’s Team Niklas Edin 3-2 during Saturday’s last-chance C-qualifiers at the Bell Aliant Centre.
Edin, who beat Gushue in last season’s world championship final, won their earlier encounter in the tournament 7-5 Wednesday in a game that was paused briefly during the third end due to condensation dripping from the ceiling.
The first Grand Slam of Curling event of the season features triple knockout — with A, B and C Event brackets — where teams must win three games before they lose three to advance to the quarterfinals.
Winnipeg’s Team Matt Dunstone and Team James Craik of Scotland also advanced from the C-qualifiers with 3-2 records. Dunstone made a short tap to score three in the eighth to beat Team John Shuster of the United States 6-5 and Craik crushed Calgary’s Team Kevin Koe 10-3.
Scotland’s Team Bruce Mouat and Team Brad Jacobs of Calgary clinched spots through the A-side undefeated at 3-0. Saskatoon’s Team Mike McEwen, Scotland’s Team Ross Whyte and Team Yannick Schwaller of Switzerland made it through the B Event with 3-1 records.
Gushue plays Whyte, Dunstone goes up against Jacobs, Craik meets Mouat and McEwen faces Schwaller during the quarterfinals at 4 p.m. AT / 3 p.m. ET.
