Elite 10 Teams in 10 Days: Gushue
Over the course of 10 days, we’re profiling all 10 teams set to compete in the Princess Auto Elite 10. Day 7: Team Gushue.
The recently crowned Brier champs get right back to work as they look to defend the Princess Auto Elite 10 title.
The St. John’s, N.L., squad had a week for the ages winning their first Canadian men’s curling championship on home ice at the Mile One Centre. Gushue held the hammer coming home in the final all tied up against Team Canada’s Kevin Koe and needed to draw into the eight-foot circle. Nichols stepped up to the plate to assist Gallant in sweeping the rock in for the win.

Team Gushue captured the Elite 10 title last season posting a perfect 6-0 record including a thrilling draw-to-the-button shootout victory over Team Carruthers in the final. Gushue followed that up by running the table at the Players’ Championship as well to complete a career Grand Slam (win all four of the original Grand Slam titles).
The crew relied on a series of spares to start this season with Gushue missing eight events due to a hip/groin issue. Nichols skipped the team in the interim and never missed the playoffs. Gushue returned in December at the Boost National and just a month later captured his seventh career Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling title at the Meridian Canadian Open throwing 100 percent in the final against Team Edin.
Nichols earned the National title with Team Stoughton in 2013, the last time the series was in Port Hawkesbury, N.S.
The Princess Auto Elite 10 starts Thursday and runs through to Sunday at the Civic Centre in Port Hawkesbury, N.S.
