Einarson, Jacobs added to Humpty’s Champions Cup field

Winnipeg’s Kerri Einarson and Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., are the newest names on the lineup for the Humpty’s Champions Cup.

Teams must win a high-profile tournament in order to receive an invite to the season-ending Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling event running April 25-30 at WinSport Park in Calgary.

Einarson earned her place defeating Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland to capture the Boost National title Sunday in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

“I’m super excited to play in the Champions Cup again,” Einarson said. “Hopefully we’ll have a good turnout there too.”

With the team in a heated race for Olympic Trials spots, second Liz Fyfe said it’s awesome they’ll have one more event on their schedule for a chance to accumulate more points towards the Canadian Team Ranking System (CTRS).

“It’s a hard one to get into so if you can get your spot early in that it’s really good,” Fyfe said. “We’re going to need the points at the end of the year so the more events we can play in is amazing. The girls will be playing without me because I’ll be having a baby but that’s okay. They’re going to do well.”

Jacobs already won a top World Curling Tour event earlier this season in Saskatoon, however, the Boost National victory over Winnipeg’s Reid Carruthers in the men’s final in his own hometown was still extra special. The reigning Olympic champion missed out on the inaugural Humpty’s Champions Cup this past season as his team didn’t qualify.

“It’s a spiel that we didn’t get into last season and that was disappointing because we didn’t win anything,” Jacobs said after the victory. “To now have another Grand Slam win, it’s huge for our team. These are the premier events, they’re the events you want to win and we’re just thrilled.”

Below is the list of teams that have punched their tickets to Calgary plus the remaining events teams must win in order to qualify.
