Edin beats Jacobs in Draw 4 of Syncrude National
FORT MCMURRAY, Alta. — Sweden’s Niklas Edin upended Olympic gold medallist Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., 8-4 during Draw 4 action Thursday at the Syncrude National.
Both Edin, who earned bronze in Sochi, and Jacobs hold 1-1 records in the Grand Slam of Curling tournament.
With Jacobs leading 3-2 at the fourth-end break, Edin took control in the second half scoring a three-ender in the fifth, forcing his opponent to a single in the sixth, and adding another trey in the seventh.
Elsewhere, Switzerland’s Sven Michel improved to 3-0 with a 10-9 victory over Glenn Howard of Penetanguishene, Ont. The wild finish between the two previously undefeated teams saw Howard (2-1) score four in the seventh to grab a 9-7 lead until Michel fired right back with a three-ender in the final frame to prevail.
Sweden’s Oskar Eriksson is now 2-0 in the tournament with a huge 8-2 win in six ends over Regina’s Brock Virtue (0-2). Down 2-1, Eriksson scored three in the third end to pull ahead and cruised away with a steal of three in the fourth and one in the sixth.
Calgary’s Kevin Koe (2-1) earned a 5-3 win in seven ends over Toronto’s Travis Fanset (0-3).
A leak in the ceiling forced the matchup between Brad Gushue of St. John’s, N.L., and South Korea’s Soo-Hyuk Kim to be postponed to Saturday at 11 a.m. ET / 9 a.m. MT.
