24 teams in 24 days — Day 21: Team Epping
We’re profiling all 24 teams, one per day, to get ready for the return of the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling leading up to the start of the Humpty’s Champions Cup.
Day 21: Team Epping
Lineup: John Epping (skip), Ryan Fry (third; not playing, Colton Lott to sub), Mat Camm (second), Brent Laing (lead)
Home club: Leaside Curling Club; Toronto
Epping has won all four major titles in the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling including three as a skip. His first came while playing second for Wayne Middaugh at the 2008 National.
Team Epping finished runners-up to Team Jacobs in the most recent Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling event at the 2020 Meridian Canadian Open in Yorkton, Sask. Coincidentally, it was in that same building where Epping won the 2015 Canadian Open men’s title shooting 100 per cent in the final against Team Gushue.
They represented Ontario at the Tim Hortons Brier last month finishing with a 7-5 record and tied for sixth place in the championship pool.
Fry will miss both Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling events to be with his family as his father, 1979 Brier winner Barry Fry, is experiencing health problems. Lott will fill in at third after earning a silver medal in the Canadian mixed doubles championship last month.
