2019 Humpty’s Champions Cup: Women’s Teams
Keep it here for an updated list of teams who have qualified for the 2019 Humpty’s Champions Cup taking place April 23-28 at Saskatoon’s Merlis Belsher Place.
Team Carey
Calgary, AB | Qualified: Scotties Tournament of Hearts
Team Carey was top of the class all week at the Canadian women’s curling championship in Sydney, NS, leading the table at the conclusion of round-robin play. Alberta fell behind early to Ontario’s Team Homan early but rallied in the second half thanks to steals and stole two in the extra end to edge out the victory 8-6.
Team Einarson
Gimli, MB | Qualified: WCT event winner (Curlers Corner Autumn Gold Curling Classic)
The new “all-skip squad” of Team Einarson connected quickly to capture four consecutive World Curling Tour titles in September-October. Their victory in Calgary was the one that clinched them a spot here as the high-profile tournament saw them persevere through the C Event of the triple knockout and never lose again with five consecutive wins including a 7-5 decision over Team Jones in the final.
Team Flaxey
Winnipeg, MB | Qualified: WCT event winner (DEKALB Superspiel).
It’s the final event together for Team Flaxey, who captured the title in Morris, MB, with a 7-5 victory over Team Clark-Rouire in the final. Skip Allison Flaxey is absent and Laura Walker is subbing. Walker joins forces next season with Cameron and McDonald.
Team Hasselborg
Sundbyberg, SWE | Qualified: Princess Auto Elite 10.
The reigning Olympic gold medallists went undefeated through the first-ever Princess Auto Elite 10 women’s tournament with a 6-0 record including a 4-and-2 match play victory (four ends won to none) over Team Tirinzoni in the final. Muirhead fills in for skip Anna Hasselborg, who is away at the world mixed doubles championship.
Team Homan
Ottawa, ON | Qualified: 2018 Humpty’s Champions Cup
The event’s double defending champions look to score a rare three-peat in the tournament. Homan has been on fire in the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling this season winning a record-setting 10th women’s title at the Meridian Canadian Open in North Battleford, SK, in January. It was also her team’s third consecutive championship in the series. Note: Campbell is subbing for Joanne Courtney.
Team Jones
Winnipeg, MB | Qualified: WCT event winner (Canada Cup)
Jones topped the best teams in the nation at the Canada Cup in Estevan, SK. Team Jones scored three points in the ninth end to clip Team Einarson 8-5. Jones won the inaugural Humpty’s Champions Cup in 2016. Note: Olson-Johns is subbing for Jocelyn Peterman, who is out of the lineup as she’s competing for Canada in the world mixed doubles curling championship.
Team Kim
Chuncheon, KOR | Qualified: Pacific-Asia Curling Championships
Kim captured the Pacific-Asia title on home ice in Gangneung, South Korea. Kim scored a deuce in the ninth and stole three in the 10th to beat Japan’s Team Fujisawa 12-8 in the gold-medal game.
Team Kovaleva
Saint Petersburg, RUS | Qualified: WCT event winner (Prestige Hotels & Resorts Curling Classic)
Kovaleva earned her spot for the Humpty’s Champions Cup all the way back in September in Vernon, BC. After a 1-2 start, Kovaleva rattled off five consecutive victories including a 7-3 win over Team Rocque in the final.
Team Rumyanceva
Moscow, RUS | Qualified: World junior curling championships
Team Rumyanceva make their Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling debut here this week after picking up gold at the world juniors in Liverpool, NS. Rumyanceva slipped past Canada’s Team Sturmay 8-7 in the gold-medal game by scoring two in the 10th and stealing one in the extra end.
Team Scheidegger
Lethbridge, AB | Qualified: WCT event winner (HDF Insurance Shoot-Out)
Team Scheidegger’s early September win in Edmonton scored them a spot here at the Humpty’s Champions Cup. Scheidegger opened with a loss but rolled out with six consecutive victories including a 6-4 win over Team Kovaleva in the final.
Team Silvernagle
North Battleford, SK | Qualified: WCT event winner (Red Deer Curling Classic)
Silvernagle’s title victory in Red Deer, AB, was among her highlights during her breakout season on tour. Team Silvernagle topped Team Mei 8-5 in the final.
Team Sinclair
Chaska, USA | Qualified: 2018 Players’ Championship
Team Sinclair’s victory at the Players’ Championship made history as they became the first American-based squad to capture a Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling title. Sinclair’s roster was retooled this season with the addition of the Anderson twins and they captured the U.S. national championship.
Team Stern
Oberwallis, SUI | Qualified: WCT event winner (Tour Challenge Tier 2)
Stern’s promotion into the elite ranks came in Thunder Bay, ON. Team Stern defeated Team Yoshimura 6-5 in the final thanks to a clutch final shot from Huerlimann, who throws fourth stones and serves as vice skip.
Team Tirinzoni
Aarau, SUI | Qualified: WCT event winner (Schweizer Cup)
Team Tirinzoni booked a spot into the Humpty’s Champions Cup with a victory on home Swiss ice in the Schweizer Cup. Tirinzoni, who skips while throwing third stones, captured her first world championship in Denmark last month with an 8-7 extra-end victory over Sweden’s Team Hasselborg in the gold-medal game.
Team Wrana
Stockholm, SWE | Qualified: WCT event winner (AMJ Campbell Shorty Jenkins Classic)
Team Wrana captured their first career World Curling Tour title in Cornwall, Ont., in September. Wrana nearly ran the table as the 2017 world junior champions went 7-1 including a narrow 5-4 extra-end victory over Team Duncan in the final.
