Stoughton is a skip who needs no introduction as one of the all-time greats. Port Hawkesbury has a special place in his legacy in the series as it was where he won the 2013 National to complete a career Grand Slam. At the time the Winnipeg native was just the fourth skip to accomplish the feat following Kevin Martin, Wayne Middaugh and Glenn Howard (Brad Gushue joined the exclusive club in 2016). Stoughton stepped back from competitive curling after the 2015 Players’ Championship and has since worked for Sportsnet as a curling commentator during provincial broadcasts and with Curling Canada as the manager of the mixed doubles program.
Also be on the lookout for Stoughton to deliver one of his trademark spin-o-rama moves out of the hack.
Nedohin capped his competitive career on top winning the Players’ Championship in 2014 with Team Martin in Summerside, P.E.I. He also won a trio of Grand Slam titles as a member of the famous “Ferbey Four” with Randy Ferbey, Scott Pfeifer and Marcel Rocque. The funny thing is the Sherwood Park, Alta., native isn’t the first member of his family to return to the sport this year as his wife Heather Nedohin was the alternate for Alberta’s Team Kleibrink at provincial playdowns and the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
Korab claimed Olympic gold for Canada at the 2006 Turin Winter Games throwing lead stones with Brad Gushue, Mark Nichols, Russ Howard and Mike Adam. It was the first time a Canadian men’s team won gold at the Winter Olympics and the St. John’s team returned home to Newfoundland to a hero’s welcome. Korab also earned a world junior championship in 2001 and the National in 2010 with Gushue.
Thiessen won Brier and world championships in 2010 as the lead for Kevin Koe. The Edmonton native also took back-to-back Brier titles in 2014 and 2015. Thiessen announced his departure from competitive curling just under a year ago at the 2016 Humpty’s Champions Cup.
