The Tour Challenge was one of two new events added to the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling schedule for the 2015-16 season and features the largest field in the series.
The goal of the Tour Challenge is to broaden the field with the opportunity for 60 teams on the World Curling Tour to participate in a Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling event on arena ice. Two ice pads are converted for a total of 10 curling sheets, one of which will host Tier 1 and the second will feature Tier 2 right next door.
The Tier 1 divisions feature the top 15 men’s teams and top 15 women’s teams in the world based on the World Curling Tour’s Order of Merit ranking system. The Tier 2 divisions also feature 15 men’s and 15 women’s teams total with the 10 next-ranked teams on the Order of Merit plus five teams from the event’s region.
Paradise, N.L., hosted the inaugural Tour Challenge in September 2015. Team Koe clipped local favourites Team Gushue of St. John’s in an extra end during the men’s final. Team Tirinzoni stunned Team Homan by stealing the eighth end of the “fog bowl” women’s final for their first career Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling title.
The Tour Challenge crossed the country the following season landing in Cranbrook, B.C. Sweden’s Team Edin picked up their second Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling title in as many weeks defeating Scotland’s Team Smith in the first-ever all-European men’s final in the series.
Team Sweeting is the only squad to win the Tier 1 title more than once capturing back-to-back championships in 2016 and 2017. They went undefeated through the 2017 tournament although they needed a steal in the final frame over Team Hasselborg to successfully defend the title.
Team Einarson is the most notable Tier 2 champion as their win in 2015 was their first title victory as a squad. They went on to capture the 2016 Boost National before slipping back into the Tier 2 stage the following season. Einarson earned the Tier 2 championship once more to receive another promotion and proved her team belonged back in the elite group finishing runner-up at the 2018 Masters.
