24 teams in 24 days — Day 19: Team Gushue

We’re profiling all 24 teams, one per day, to get ready for the return of the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling leading up to the start of the Humpty’s Champions Cup.

Day 19: Team Gushue

Lineup: Brad Gushue (skip), Mark Nichols (third), Brett Gallant (second), Geoff Walker (lead)

Home club: RE/MAX Centre, St. John’s Curling Club; St. John’s, N.L.

Gushue has captured 11 Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling men’s titles and made history at the 2018 Humpty’s Champions Cup at Calgary’s WinSport Arena becoming the first to win one from each of the six events in the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling.

Team Gushue won the Brier three times in four years taking the tankard in 2017, 2018 and 2020. As Team Canada, they claimed gold at the 2017 world championship and silver in 2018. Gushue and Nichols also won gold for Canada at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin, Italy.

Gushue has qualified for the playoffs in 13 consecutive Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling events dating back to 2018. The team finished runners-up last year at the Masters in North Bay, Ont., and the KIOTI Tractor Tour Challenge in Pictou County, N.S., and were semifinalists at the BOOST National in Conception Bay South, N.L., and the Meridian Canadian Open in Yorkton, Sask.

Team Gushue competed in two tour events in Halifax in the fall and ran the table in both events to win the titles. They just missed the playoffs in the Brier last month tied for fourth place with an 8-4 record.

The Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling returns with the Humpty’s Champions Cup, April 14-18, followed by the Princess Auto Players’ Championship, April 20-25. Both events will be played at Calgary’s WinSport Arena and closed to the general public. Watch live coverage on Sportsnet, click here for the broadcast schedule.
